There is a great quantity of evidence pointing to the energy savings of LED bulbs but on the otherside of the equation they do have a particularly high price tag. Another factor in their advantage is long life and high reliability so how do you analyze whether they are worth using? The best way to get factual data of the financials is to have a look at the lifetime costs for
LED Bulbs and compare this to traditional light bulbs.
The calculation of lifetime costs. This calculation involves working out the lifetime energy costs for the LED bulb and adding these to the purchase figure. Then you then work out the energy costs for the everyday light bulb over the equivalent period of time and add on the price of 30 customary light bulbs as the LED bulbs last 30 times as long.
LED Candle Light Bulb calculation. A cost of 15 pence for each kWhour of electricity used has been assumed for these calculations.
Cost of LED Bulb = £15 and the cost of running a 3watt LED for 30000 hours = £13.50, which adds up to a total cost of ownership of £28.50.
A 3 watt LED candle will give the same lumens output as a 25 watt traditional bulb. With a standard light bulb the rated hours service is ordinarily 1000 hours. 1000 hours life is the normal rated lifespan of a conventional bulb.
The charge for 30 candle light bulbs at 80 pence each works out at £24. To run the candle light bulb for 30k hours will cost £112.50. This calculation then results in a total cost of £136.50 for the conventional light bulb.
The result is a saving of a massive £108 through the purchase of the 3w LED candle bulb over the life span of the bulb. This means that through the purchase of the LED candle bulb a huge saving of £108 is made over it's lifespan.
That is simply a most substantial cost saving achieved by migrating to LED bulbs.
Comparison for a 3watt MR16 LED Working out the saving for the 3 watt MR16 uses the same process so I shall not detail each and every step. It is crucial to differentiate between high powered variants which retail at around £15 and the 48 LED variants which retail at around £10. The high powered LED's will give out a single or triple beam whereas the 48 LED lamps have 48 different light beams.
Using the same cost data for the MR16's as we did for the candles the life savings are as follows:-
£113 is saved by changing to the 48LED MR16 over its life.
The high powered LED MR16 will secure savings of £108 over its lifetime.
Again the savings are humongous and only vary by 4.5% across the different forms of LED bulbs.
